The eldest daughter of NDP Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Flor Marcelino is stepping into her mother’s shoes in the next provincial election on September 10, 2019.

Malaya Marcelino won the NDP nomination yesterday, Sunday (June 23) for the new Notre Dame riding.

She defeated another Filipina, Kelly Legaspi, in a hotly contested nomination.

The elder Marcelino, MLA for Logan, is stepping down after three terms. She was the first woman of colour to be appointed to a cabinet post in Manitoba and the first to become a leader of a political party.

When the governing NDP went down in defeat in 2016, Greg Selinger resigned as leader and Marcelino was elected interim leader until the election of the current leader Wab Kinew.

Manitoba is the only Canadian province with three sitting MLAs: NDP Flor Marcelino (Logan), NDP Ted Marcelino ( Tyndall Park) and Conservative Jon Reyes (St. Norbert).
