First of a series

In a belated response to the weeks-long occupation of Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, and blockades of key border crossings, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau declared a national state of emergency on Monday, February 14, 2022.

Invoking the Emergencies Act, Trudeau was compelled to rely on the never-before used radical solution to the festering revolt by domestic terrorists disguising themselves as ‘truckers’ protesting vaccine mandates.

Yet, on the 21st day of the so-called occupation of the capital, protesters are seen as reluctant and determined to fight it out and are not showing any signs of capitulating.

Other protesters in the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Coutts, Alberta, Surrey, B.C. and Emerson, Manitoba have either been cleared or arrested. These borders are now open preventing further economic losses estimated to be in the billions of dollars. The losses does not include policing costs in the millions of dollars.

Plan is to overthrow the government

Despite propaganda by the protesters that it was done to oppose the vaccine mandate, it was clear that it was not. Besides, 90% of the truckers are vaccinated and their own association has distanced themselves from the occupation and condemned it as counter-productive that hurt the people of Canada and the truckers themselves.

Trucks instead of tanks

The attack on the nation’s capital was a well-planned operation that could not have been executed without leadership. It was aided and abetted not only by domestic supporters but also by foreign supporters including the former U.S. President Donald Trump and Republican Congressman Ted Cruz of Texas, among others. The CEO of ‘My Pillow’, Mike Lindell, is a conspiracy advocate, has donated 10,000 pillows to the truckers.

In fact a substantial amount of money raised through crowdfunding platform GoFundMe came from U.S. donors raising $10 million in less than a month. The fund has now been frozen and donors have moved to a so-called Christian fund – GiveSendGo now currently almost a million.

The original move to occupy the capital first, followed by blockading border crossings was designed to choke Canada’s important trade points, borrowing it seems, from the Communist book of encircling the cities.

Local police forces were unable to respond quickly and were overwhelmed and had to call on the provincial and federal help.

Who is aligning with protesters?

As debate in Parliament goes on as required to approve the implementation of the Emergencies Act, it is clear that the opposition parties except the NDP, are against using the Act, arguing that protests at other sites were resolved without resorting to the Act.

The Conservatives especially are guilty of aiding and abetting these rebellion right at the start of the occupation by encouraging them and even some Conservative MPs going out and taking selfies with them. Now in debate they have flipped-flop and stating they don’t support the occupation.

But instead of participating in the debates, the Conservatives have repeatedly heckled the Prime Minister and other Liberal MPs to the point of drowning the speaker. Despite admonitions from the Speaker of the House to be ‘civil’, the Conservatives continue to defy the Speaker.

Because the Liberals are in a minority, they need the support of the NDP who have committed to give their support. So it will pass and will go to the Senate where it is expected to pass quickly.

Now people are waiting as tensions rise as to when police will move in and make arrests and clear the streets.

Demonstrators have vowed to fight to the end and would not move, some saying they are prepared to die for their cause.

So, the war goes on as we write but like in any war, there are casualties.

First, the Chief of Police of Ottawa has resigned, followed by the Chair of the Police Board. There are now calls for the Mayor to resign. The illegal occupation has exposed a fissure in City Council as well as the failure of the provincial government to respond to the crisis in a timely manner.

We wait with bated breath and hope this will be resolved quickly but we do not entertain any hope that it will end peacefully given the intransigence of the protesters.
