Filipino artists to hold art projects across Canada

6 communities to be part in Philippine Cultural Heritage Month celebration

By Charmaine Y. Rodriguez

A group of Filipino artists is taking a community arts project across Canada in time for Philippine cultural heritage month.

MigARTion community arts project will be done in partnership with organizations and communities, according to a statement released by Co.ERASGA.

Co.ERASGA is an arts organization with roots of Filipino heritage, migrant stories and racialized settlers.

“MigARTion aims to create critical and creative space where professional artists and the migrant community, create art together, in a shared environment of planning, integration and eventual execution of the project. It is engaging art practices through dancing, writing, singing, painting and acting, as a social intervention to marginalization and intercultural alienation, and a process that nurtures the everyday practice of criticality and empathy,” the statement added.

The project will be held in Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, New Westminster and Victoria between June 3 and 25, 2023.

“Co.ERASGA calls upon POC members and (im)migrants to participate in arts and culture exchanges through dance, music, theater, visual arts and creative writings,” it also read.

The mobilization of MigARTion project is led by Co. ERASGA artistic director, choreographer/dancer Alvin Erasga Tolentino with his project artistic team of Filipino artists – theatre director Dennis Gupa, music and opera trained singer Jeremiah Carag, poet/writer Karla Comanda and visual artist Christopher Nazaire.
