Beloved advocate succumbs to cancer
Tireless community advocate Socorro ‘Coring’ Juan has died. Friends posted her death today ( February 12, 2024) of cancer.
Active with her advocacies up and until her death Juan was advocating for cancer research and was featured in a Winnipeg Health Science Centre Foundation ad in March 2022.
“At 79, I feel good and my cancer is under close surveillance. I try to keep a positive attitude,” Juan was quoted in the ad.
The former School Board trustee for Seven Oaks Division, Juan arrived in Canada in 1974 and first worked as a dietary aide at Winnipeg’s Health Science Centre before becoming an elementary school teacher and eventually vice-principal. She was a co-founder of the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers (MAFTI). A recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal Juan strongly lobbied for the establishment of the Filipino Bilingual Program at Seven Oaks. The program unfortunately has not survived due to a lack of enrollment.
No funeral arrangements has been announced at time of posting.
