Tour the country through the eyes of these writers
A panel of writers will read their work on Sunday, June 27, 2021, capping the month-long celebration of Philippine Heritage Month.
The virtual tour of Canada will be at 4 PM, Eastern and 1 PM Pacific. Close to 100 are already registered for the free event but you can still tour tomorrow via our LIVE STREAM!
A first for Canada, the writers delve into the Filipino-Canadian experience – from growing up in the working class district of Cote-de-Neis of Montreal, or the small city of Sarnia, in the garment district of Winnipeg to the bustling suburbs of Vancouver and Edmonton.
From the Filipino enclaves of Toronto’s Little Manila, Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant, and Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges, to cities such as Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg, to more remote towns and villages rarely represented in Canadian literature, writers will use a combination of pictures and literary work to showcase various neighborhoods, parks, landmarks, and other places across Canada, based on their unique perspective as an immigrant, newcomer, migrant worker, or second-generation child of immigrants.
Together, the various narratives from this diverse group of writers will shed light on the successes and challenges of a minority group, reveal systemic barriers faced by immigrant communities, and highlight Canadian heritage, diversity, and multiculturalism through a Filipino lens.
The event will be emceed by Jeanette Flores Dotimas with technical support by Kherl Meeno Reyes.
Federal Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth, Hon. Bardish Chagger will address the event which will be opened by Metis poet and author Naomi McIlwraith of Edmonton.
