The election of Justin Trudeau, son of former PM Pierre Trudeau has a familiar ring to most Filipinos where political dynasties are a fact of life in the country.
Trudeau is the first in the history of Canada to follow his father to Ottawa.
Current President PNoy Aquino is the son of former Pre. Corazon Aquino and Senator Ninoy Aquino. His predecessor, Gloria Mcapagal-Arroyo is the daughter of Pres. Diosdado Macapagal.
The man who wants to replace Aquino in the 2016 presidential elections is Gerry Roxas, the grandson of President Manuel Roxas and the son of Senator Gerry Roxas.
Senator Bongbong Marcos,son of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos is planning to run as president in 2016. His mother Imelda is currently a member of Parliment while his sister Imee is governor of Ilocos Norte.
In some parts of the country, dynasties rule their areas like their own personal fiefdoms with generations of the same family holding power.
Attempts have been made to break up the stranglehold of dynasties by legislation but so far, it has not been successful.
