Manitoba is the second province in Canada to actively recruit Philippine-trained nurses to help fill the gap in health care workers. Last year, the province of Saskatchewan announced that 70 Filipino nurses were ready to move after a successful recruitment drive.
Reyes, a Conservative, is the second Filipino-Canadian currently sitting in the Manitoba legislature. The other is Malaya Marcelino of the NDP.
Reyes was first elected as MLA for St. Norbert in 2016 becoming the first Canadian-born person of Filipino descent elected to the Manitoba legislature and subsequently re-elected as MLA for Waverley in 2019.
He currently serves as Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Immigration since January, 2022, and was most recently the Minister of Economic Development and Jobs.
He is the son of Filipino immigrants whose father worked in Winnipeg’s garment industry 50 years ago. He is one of two second generation Filipino Canadians elected to the provincial legislature.
Reyes and Marcelino followed previous MLA’s, Flor Marcelino and Ted Marcelino, both NDPs. Manitoba boasts of the most Filipinos elected to the legislature including the late Conrad Santos, the first Filipino ever elected in 1981. He was followed by Cris Aglugub in 1999. Manitoba also holds the distinction of electing the first Filipino to Parliament – Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, elected in 1988. .
