Florencio Relampagos Chatto is remembered as a kind and generous father

OCTOBER 27, 1935 – JUNE 17, 2022

Florencio Relampagos Chatto entered fully into the presence of the Lord shortly after heart surgery, on Friday, June 17, 2022, in Newmarket, Ontario. He was 86.

Flor, or ‘Boy Flor’ was born on October 27, 1935, in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines, to Eugenio Sr. & Cornelia Chatto (nee Relampagos). He is survived by his sister Luciana Butalid (the late Ramon Sr.) and their children Rodney (Jessica), the late Roderick, Randel (Christie), Lura (Jose Antonio), Emmanuel Roy (Salvie), Ramon, Jr. (Ivy), Liza (Willy); and his brother Eugenio Jr. (Noli) and their children Gena (Roger) and Eugene III (Andrea); as well as his many great-nieces and nephews.

Florencio obtained a BSc. in Psychology at the University of Santo Thomas in the Philippines and trained in microbiology in San Francisco, CA. Then, in 1965, Dr. Agnew from the University of Regina brought him to Canada to finish his microbiology training. Following his training, an instructor and technician position in microbiology was offered to him by the department. On weekends, he was a hematology technologist for the Provincial Labs of Saskatchewan. He maintained both positions until his retirement in November 2000.

As one of the earliest Filipinos to immigrate to Saskatchewan, he was one of the founding members of the Filipino community. In the mid-60s, they gathered to celebrate and keep their heritage alive on the weekends. Then, through the urging of friends, they introduced him to Lydia Soria Laviste. The two started to date, and on December 24, 1967, they were married at Blessed Sacrament Church in Regina. His family survives him, his wife and two sons, Floyd Francis and Farley Dean Laviste (John), and his sister-in-law, Leticia Soria Laviste.

A father like you is rare, one that is so generous, smart and kind. A father like you is what everyone needs, full of smiles and laughter and always doing great deeds. Nothing can replace a father like you. You are now with the Lord, watching and protecting us with your love.

Visitation and Prayers were held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 and Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Lee Funeral Home, 3101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK. The Funeral Mass was held on Friday, July 8, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2104 Garnet Street, Regina, Saskatchewan followed by a luncheon after Mass and cemetery Interment.
