Filipino Fiesta returns for second year in Churchill Square June 9 to 11

Edmonton, AB – Festival fans are invited to Churchill Square June 9 to 11 to celebrate Edmonton’s second Filipino Fiesta.

“Last year’s Fiesta received such a warm welcome so we are very happy to bring the celebration back again,” said event chair Tony Santiago. “With more performances, more vendors and more things for people to see and do, the Fiesta is a chance for the over 45,000 Filipinos in the city to come together and also a time to share the best of the Philippine culture, arts and traditions with the larger community.

In the year of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the Fiesta is incorporating a collaborative mural project into its programming. People can write, draw or paint a depiction of their “Being Canadian” experiences on a 20 ft. long canvas. Once completed, organizers plan to display the mural at various cultural events.

Fiesta Stage – (All weekend) Over 35 acts will take the main stage ranging from traditional to contemporary, all with an unmistakable Filipino flare – vocalists, bands, dancers, choirs, comedians, martial arts, Zumba and more.

Fiesta Family Zone – (Saturday and Sunday) Kids of all ages can try their hand at Filipino street games and arts and crafts. There will also be storytellers reciting in English and Tagalog, face painters and a bouncy castle for little ones.

Fiesta Marketplace – (All weekend) Guests can shop, browse services and sink their teeth into sumptuous dishes. Five local restaurants will sell a variety of Filipino snacks and dishes while and over 30 vendors will feature goods and services. Additionally, service organizations including the Edmonton Mennonite Center for Newcomers and ASSIST Community Services Center have been invited this year to offer advice and information to the community.

(Fiestas are joyful and grand events at the heart of Filipino culture. They are held in almost every town across the country to celebrate patron saints, ethnic traditions and important milestones for the local people. Celebrations often spill into the streets where people of all ages and walks of life take part in parades, processions and other merrymaking. No fiesta is complete without a feast, pageantry, games, music and dancing!)
