As has been widely predicted, a federal election will be held on September 20, 2021 after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau goes to see the Governor General this Sunday (August 15) to ask that Parliament be dissolved.

Although a general election is scheduled every four years which will still be in October 2023, Trudeau choose to call an election hoping the he gets a majority.

Currently, the Liberals hold a slim majority of 157 seats and if all opposition parties join forces and want to topple the government, they can call for non-confidence motion which will then trigger an election.

Liberals – 157

Conservatives – 121

NDP- 24

Greens -3

Bloc Quebecois – 36

After a federal election, the political party that elects the most members to the House of Commons forms the government and their party leader becomes the Prime Minister of Canada.

What are the chances of the three Filipino-Canadian candidates?

Of the three, only Phil de Luna of the Greens is the most organized with a campaign team that has been working for months now. De Luna who is running in Toronto-St. Paul’s riding is facing a formidable opponent  – the Liberal incumbent, Carolyn Bennett. Bennett is a high-profile cabinet minister( Crown and Indigenous Relations), she elected in 1997.

In Oxford, Ontario, lawyer Elizabeth Quinto for the Liberals ,is facing incumbent Conservative Dave MacKenzie, elected in 2019 and NDP Matthew Chambers.

The Liberals Virginia Austria Bremner is facing incumbent NDP Don Davies (elected in 2008) and Binda Carson for the Conservatives.

All three are facing an uphill battle.
