FILIPINO-CANADIAN TRUSTEE ELECTED  SEPARATE SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR

Luz Del Rosario, one of the longest-serving School Trustees in the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board(DPCDSB) in Ontario, is elected Chair of the Board. A Filipino -Canadian serving as Trustee for Wards 6 & 11 in Mississauga, Del Rosario assumed the position after being chosen by the 11 members of the Catholic school board on November 22, 2022. 
 
In addition to the election of the Board chair and vice chair, trustees elected or acclaimed the chairs and vice chairs of various standing committees of the
Board. Another Filipino- Canadian, former Mississauga high school principal Herman Viloria, was elected Vice-Chair of the Faith and Program Committee.

DPCDSB is one of the largest and fastest-growing school boards in Ontario with 151 elementary and secondary schools, almost 80,000 students, and 8,000 teachers and employees. The board’s jurisdiction extends throughout the municipalities of Mississauga, Brampton, Bolton, Caledon, Orangeville, and Dufferin County. 

 Del Rosario is the first Filipino elected as Chair of the DPCDSB. She was elected Vice-Chair in December 2020. As a school trustee, she serves as a system leader of publicly-funded education in their community of schools in the electoral district.  Del Rosario has served in various leadership capacities during her twelve (12) years on the Board of Trustees having been elected first in the 2006-2010 term, then in 2014-2018, and was re-elected in 2018. Trustees in the Catholic school system “work collaboratively with their community to shape the vision that is reflective of the input of parents, students, and community members.”

She has a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the Philippines and also completed the Human Resource Management Program at the University of Toronto and was given the Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation in 1996. On September 29, 2020, Del Rosario spearheaded the approval of the Proclamation to celebrate the Quincentennial Jubilee of Christianity in the Philippines in all schools at the DPCDSB in 2021.  A community leader and long-time resident of Mississauga, she is a recipient of various civic, cultural, and community awards.
