YOUNG FILIPINO-CANADIAN ARTIST DELIVERS AWESOME PIANO PERFORMANCE AT RECITAL
Oswald Magno
In the first of two recitals required in the first year of Glenn Gould School’s Artist Diploma Program, Johann Derecho, a young Filipino-Canadian, delivered what many in the audience described as a masterful and stunning piano performance, with his repertoire of classical pieces by Tchaikovsky, Bach, Beethoven, Kabalevsky and Chopin.
Johann played all three movements of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat Minor, op. 23, and all four movements of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 18 in E Flat Major, op. 31, no.3. He also played Kabalevsky’s Rondo in A Minor, op. 59, considered to be a very difficult piece.
Johann is studying as a full-scholar of the Artist Diploma Program, a two-year performance-oriented program with a curriculum designed for gifted young artists who are on the verge of a professional career.
Glenn Gould School is considered one of the top conservatories in North America, and the world.
Johann recently graduated in May with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Piano Performance degree from the school, under full 4-year scholarship.
Johann, 22 years old, is the son of proud parents Richmond and Anita, who moved to Canada in 2002.
