Renowned Filipino-Canadian artists Manila Grey and Filipino-American rapper Ruby Ibarra are among top performers in the first Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party on April 27. The star-studded event from 41st to 48th in Vancouver will feature other performers including 2x Grammy-nominated John Concepcion, Jeremy Passion, Gabe Bondoc, and Russell.

The day is named after the Filipino tribal chieftain Lapu Lapu who was the first to thwart the Spanish colonizers by killing Magellan on April 27, 1521 in the Battle of Mactan.

The Battle of Mactan by Manuel Pañares, Medium.

Here is how the battle was described by the late Alex Tizon in his book ‘Big Little Man’:
“….As they approached,Magellan sent an emissary to shore with a message for Lapu Lapu: “If you would simply obey the king of Spain, recognize the Christian god as your sovereign, and pay us your tribute, I would be your friend. But if you wish otherwise, you should wait toes how our lances wound.”

Lapu Lapu sent his emissary back with his own message: “I submit to no king and do not pay tribute to any power, Our warriors have lances, too, and they are made from stout bamboo and hardened with fire. Come across whenever you like.”

Local Filipino talent will also be performing, including Mikey Jose, Jaenna Cali, Kaya Ko, Mar Emanuel, Julie Rae, Nikkaela, Finest Summer, KeeMajore, Kardias Quing and many others. The inclusion of drag performers such as Kimmy Couture and local talents like Margaux Rita, Bongganisa and Pia Little adds a vibrant dimension to the festivities.

Organized by Filipino BC and MYX Global, the block party promises to be a fun-filled day with a palengke-style market, arts, musical performances, sports, exhibits and food stalls.
