RBC continues to shine a light on emerging artists with new award

A Vancouver-based queer, performance artist, teacher and community leader has been selected the RBC’s new emerging Artist Award, the National Arts Centre (NAC) announced yesterday, May 25. NAC is the presenting sponsor of the 2023 Governor Genral’s Performing Arts Award.

“Success in the arts is heavily influenced by the wealth, resources, and cultural capital an individual has access to, and receiving this award uplifts the hard work of artists who don’t have that same access,” said Escamillian.

RBC recognizes Ralph Escamillan, whose “company FakeKnot, creates work that strives to understand the complexities of identity using sound, costume, technology and the body,” says RBC.
He was chosen from among 13 candidates in a selection process conducted by a committee of artistic leaders based on eligibility, merit, and impact on the community.
FakeKnot just completed its highly successful production of Piña at the SFU Woodward’s  and The Dance Centre.
