‘Hoping for a bright future…’

Rio de Janeiro may have it’s iconic The Girl from Ipanema, but Saskatoon has its own – The Boy at Saskatoon.
And he is Filipino.
The Boy At Saskatoon is a 24 ft. high x 12 ft. wide mural in the prairie City of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Modelled after a Filipino boy who is now 14, the mural is titled Pamana: Filipino Mural YXE. “Pamana” which translates to Legacy.
Created by Regina native and world-famous muralist Emmanuel Jarus in 2016, it is a collaborative effort of the City of Saskatoon, Mendel’s Mural, and the PAMANA Filipino Mural committee. It is located on the side of the MacLean Building on Third Avenue South.
The plaque on the mural says it is “a legacy of the Filipino-Canadians of Saskatoon to their adopted home, a hope for the a bright new future. The eyes of the child are looking upwards, any dream is possible. MABUHAY!”
The muralist told The Saskatoon Star Phoenix that he got the commission through an open call and the reason he picked it is that the Filipino community were “open to the idea of me coming and meeting kids from the Filipino community and then making the mural up on the spot.”
