The POEA is mandated to regulate the business of attracting and deploying Filipinos to work abroad.

Overseas work, which started to go full-blast in the 1970s, is full of stories of abuse and exploitation. Government regulation is meant to minimize such incidents.

In 2015, the estimated 10 million migrant Filipinos sent home almost $30 billion. Together with the business process outsourcing, remittances from OFWs have been the main source of positive numerical economic growth of the Philippines.
