First Filipino and woman to sit on council

The first Filipino woman to be elected in Whitehorse,YT has won a fourth term.

The Philippine-born Curteanu first got elected to the Whitehorse City Council in 2012 and in 2018. She unsuccessfully run in the 2016 provincial election for a seat in the Yukon Legislative Assembly as a Yukon Liberal Party candidate.

Curteanu joins the first Chinese-Canadian woman in council – Melissa Murray, who topped the votes at 10.6 per cent, or 3,546 ballots. Curteanu came in third at 2,857 votes or 8.5 per cent.

The 50-year old mother of four came to Canada in1976 settling in different cities before finally taking roots in Whitehorse.

“Thank you to everyone who voted, and for all the support and well wishes I’ve received. I’m humbled by your trust in electing me for a 4th term.  

I’m so excited to be able to work with an awesome team:  Councillors-elect Mellisa Murray, Michelle Friesen, Ted Laking, Kirk Cameron, and fellow incumbent Dan Boyd with Mayor-elect Laura Cabott. – Congratulations

I want to also extend my gratitude to our longest serving mayor, Dan Curtis,  and Samson Hartland,  Jan Stick,  and Steve Roddick for their inspiring service.  

Last but certainly not least, many thanks to the candidates who put their lives on hold to step up and offer their service to our city. You are all amazing!

Can’t wait to get back to work!!!”

Meanwhile, all the Filipino-Canadian political aspirants in Alberta lost their bid including Grace Yan who run for Mayor of Calgary. Two women candidates are running in the Montreal municipal elections this November.
