One Line at a Time: Filipinx Spoken Word Artists
Five young Filipino Canadian artists will share how they overcome adversity in their lives through spoken word in an online event on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 PM.
‘One Line at a Time: Filipino Spoken Word Artists’ is part of a new programming series at the Vancouver Public Library designed to celebrate Asian voices and push back against discrimination.
Spoken word as an art form connects people through sharing stories, emotions and lived experiences. Come hear from six Filipinx Canadian spoken word artists who will discuss what it’s like to take space on stage, and how they use language to overcome adversity and express their full selves, one line at a time.
Enjoy words from Patrick de Belen, Kimmortal (moderator), Sol Diana, Tin Lorica and Mildred Grace German in a lively discussion.
Patrick de Belen is a Toronto-based Filipino spoken word poet, performer, speaker, host and educator whose formidable acclaim as a performance artist and writer is equaled by his commitment to his community, and his status as an enduring source of insight, energy and mentorship for young poets across North America.
Kimmortal is a queer non binary filipinx-canadian artist, settler based on unceded coast salish territory. Their gifted ancestors are from pangasinan and negros occidental and they belong to a big circle of queer trans femme filipinx healers. Kim is a powerful and soulful multidisciplinary artist/artivist in rap, song, theatre, poetry, and visual art.
Sol Diana is a spoken-word artist on stolen, unceded Coast Salish Territories. He is currently studying to be a teacher at Simon Fraser University’s PDP program.
Tin Lorica is a comedian and writer based in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh. Tin has been featured on JFL Originals’ “Stand-up BC: Grossly Underfunded Circus” compilation album, which came out in November 2021. They co-host Millennial Line, a live comedy and poetry series, as well as Yellow Fever: An All-Asian Comedy Show, which has been featured at JFL Northwest.
Mildred Grace German is a Filipino-Canadian multi-disciplinary artist born and raised in the Philippines. She came to Canada after being sponsored by her mother who came here first to work. Her experiences of forced migration and as a Filipino migrant youth in Canada have opened her eyes to the many issues affecting the world today. Art is like oxygen for her.
